VALR and AltCoinTrader should be compared using the complete buy-and-cash-out journey. For a smaller rand balance, a deposit charge and a fixed withdrawal component can matter as much as the trading percentage. This guide separates those costs so you can replace the example inputs with your own quotes.
The South African exchange hub provides the wider shortlist. Neither this comparison nor an affiliate relationship establishes that a platform is suitable for every asset or network.
What the current evidence establishes
VALR's published entry-tier fiat-pair fees are 0.18% maker and 0.35% taker. Ordinary EFT deposits are free. Its normal withdrawal allowance is 30 free withdrawals monthly, then R8.50 each.
AltCoinTrader's published entry-tier maker/taker rates are 0.50%/0.60%. Its ordinary ZAR deposit charge is 0.5%, capped at R95. Bank charges can apply separately. The fee page was read directly on 20 September 2026; these are published tariff inputs, not executable account quotes.
Its directly readable withdrawal help clarifies the ordinary charge as R16 plus 0.5%, with the percentage component capped at R95. That distinction matters: the total maximum under that formula is R111, not R95. Near-instant service adds another amount under the provider's conditions.
A same-amount worksheet
We model R1,000 deposited, one taker purchase and a later taker sale with no market-price change. Fees are deducted from the working balance at each stage. No crypto is sent outside the exchange. This is a friction model, not a return forecast or the exact fee-booking behaviour of an account.
| Stage | VALR model | AltCoinTrader model |
|---|---|---|
| Bank outlay | R1,000.00 | R1,000.00 |
| After deposit charge | R1,000.00 | R995.00 |
| After purchase charge | R996.50 | R989.03 |
| After sale charge | R993.01 | R983.10 |
| After normal withdrawal | R993.01 | R962.18 |
Unrounded formulas are VALR: 1,000 × (1 − 0.0035)² = R993.01225. AltCoinTrader: 1,000 × (1 − 0.005) × (1 − 0.006)² = R983.09582 before withdrawal; subtract R16 and 0.5% of that amount to get R962.18034, or R962.18 after final rounding. The table displays rounded values but carries unrounded inputs between stages. Actual transaction rounding can differ.
The example shows why you must state a rounding method. It also shows why a comparison cannot stop at “trading starts from” a top-tier rate. Replace every percentage if your actual tier differs, and add your bank's own charges where applicable.
A one-way purchase needs a different endpoint
If you intend to hold BTC in your own wallet, delete the sale and bank-withdrawal rows. Add the exact BTC withdrawal charge and final BTC receipt instead. A purchase-and-sale model would overstate your costs for a one-way acquisition.
Check the token, network, minimum withdrawal and destination support before comparing transfer prices. A token appearing in an exchange catalogue does not prove that every network is available. This article does not publish a static network checklist that could be mistaken for a current deposit guarantee.
The wallet guide explains the custody decision. Start with a small test transfer where feasible, ensuring it clears the destination minimum after fees.
Compare the contracting parties and support route
Read each provider's own terms and FAIS disclosure, using the exact legal entity rather than the trading name alone. AltCoinTrader's terms identify AltCoinTrader (Pty) Ltd; VALR's terms identify VALR (Pty) Ltd for the services described there. Product scope still needs checking. This article does not infer blanket authorisation from a logo or app-store listing.
For a delayed cash-out, save the withdrawal ID, submission time, amount and bank reference. “Completed” on an exchange can mean the instruction has been sent; confirm the bank credit separately. Account changes, verification and payment-system delays can affect a withdrawal.
Your final comparison
Use the same asset, trade size, order type and destination. Obtain both executable quotes close together. Add the deposit, trade and exit costs once each, and record final usable proceeds. A modest fee saving is irrelevant if the route does not support the network you need.
Save the quote and fee breakdown before confirming. If an account shows a different fee, recalculate the worksheet using that figure and check whether a different payment method or volume tier explains the difference.
