Luno and VALR can both serve a rand-based buyer, but the cheaper route changes with the task. At the entry trading tiers checked for this article, VALR has the lower BTC/ZAR taker fee; Luno has the lower USDT/ZAR taker fee. A simple purchase, a trade on an order book and a bank withdrawal are different services. Compare the journey you intend to complete.
Start with the South African exchange hub if you still need to choose an account. The calculations below compare published charges. They are not live executable prices, independent custody audits or reports of trades we placed.
Three journeys, three answers
We use a R10,000 trade value, the entry tier, ordinary EFT funding and a normal rand withdrawal where relevant. We assume identical pre-fee prices only to isolate the charge. No external crypto transfer is included. Actual execution can change the result.
| Task | Luno published charge | VALR published charge | Charge on R10,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple/Portfolio purchase | 2% | 1.6% | R200 versus R160 |
| BTC/ZAR order-book taker | 0.60% | 0.35% | R60 versus R35 |
| USDT/ZAR order-book taker | 0.20% | 0.35% | R20 versus R35 |
Each cell is trade value multiplied by the fee rate. These are fees on a R10,000 trade, not a promise that a R10,000 all-in budget buys R10,000 of crypto. If the platform reserves a fee inside your budget, use its final quantity instead.
Ordinary EFT deposits are listed as free by both. Luno lists normal rand withdrawals as free; VALR includes 30 per month, then charges R8.50 each. A small recurring purchase and a user making frequent cash-outs therefore have different priorities. Card or instant funding can add a separate cost and should not be quietly substituted for EFT in a comparison.
Check whether a lower fee survives the price difference
Suppose, purely as a model, venue A charges R25 less on a R10,000 BTC purchase, but its executable BTC price is 0.4% worse. The approximate R40 price disadvantage outweighs the fee saving. The relevant output is BTC received for the same total rand debit.
Write down the quote time, total debit, fee and final BTC quantity on both venues. Divide total rand debited by BTC received to obtain your effective rand price per BTC. Do not add a spread estimate again if it is already reflected in the final quote. Avoid comparing a fresh quote with a screenshot from earlier in the day.
For a stablecoin sale, reverse the measurement: net rand received divided by tokens sold. The dollar peg does not determine the local order-book price or guarantee the same rand proceeds everywhere.
Convenience and execution need separate scores
A simple purchase reduces the decisions required. An order book asks you to choose the market, amount and order type. A market order prioritises execution against available orders; a limit order controls price but might wait or never fill. A limit order that immediately matches available liquidity can be a taker. The word “limit” alone does not establish the fee.
A fair usability comparison asks whether you can identify the final debit, cancel an unfilled order, download records and find support. We have not timed onboarding or ranked response times. Check the current account screens yourself before funding a large balance.
Custody and support checks before committing
Keeping assets on either exchange means depending on its custody, security controls and withdrawal service. Neither a low fee nor a familiar app removes that dependency. Keep your sign-in email protected and enable the strongest supported authentication you can maintain safely.
For a withdrawal to your own wallet, first establish that both ends support the exact asset and network. Obtain the exchange's current withdrawal quote. A wallet-management choice belongs in the wallet guide, not in a fee winner badge.
If a payment is delayed, use the provider's official support channel with the payment reference and timestamps. Never hand a support contact your password, one-time code or recovery phrase. This comparison makes no claim that either provider resolves all cases faster.
A decision you can reproduce
Choose one task and one amount. Compare quotes at approximately the same time, with the same funding method, trading pair and exit destination. Save the calculation and source date. Then repeat after a fee-tier change or before a larger purchase.
For a first BTC purchase, the local buying walkthrough provides the broader sequence. For this comparison, the useful answer is the venue and interface that produce the required outcome at an acceptable total cost, with controls you understand.
