How to spend crypto in South Africa

Pay at Pick n Pay and other QR-enabled merchants, use VALR Pay or Bybit Pay, or compare a crypto card with the real conversion cost visible.

The short answer

Summary

The easiest local route is VALR Pay: it works at Pick n Pay and at participating Zapper, Scan to Pay, Ozow and Peach Payments merchants. Bybit Pay is the international alternative. For a card, start with OKX; check Bybit Card eligibility inside the app before relying on it.

Where to start

Our first choice

VALR

VALR Pay lets verified users scan supported South African payment QR codes and pay with ZAR or supported crypto.

  • Direct support at Pick n Pay stores nationwide
  • Works across participating Zapper, Scan to Pay, Ozow and Peach Payments merchants
  • Keeps buying, paying and ZAR cash-out in one local account

Use our invite code VAURZWMT when you open your account to save on eligible fees and receive any reward available under VALR’s current referral terms.

OKX

  • South Africa listed as available by OKX
  • Visa or Mastercard depending on the issuing programme
  • USDT, USDC and USDG funding; conversion spread and reward terms apply

Card alternative

Bybit

Bybit Card can turn balances into card spending, but issuance is country- and account-specific. Confirm that South Africa appears in your application flow before funding for this purpose.

  • Virtual and physical formats in supported programmes
  • Card spending draws from the Bybit funding account
  • Conversion, FX, ATM and programme fees vary

Bybit says card availability is limited and determined during the residence check. Do not assume a Bybit trading account automatically qualifies for a card.

CHECK BYBIT CARD ELIGIBILITY

1. Pay by QR code at South African stores

Pick n Pay helped make crypto payments practical in South Africa. At the till, ask to pay by QR code, scan the code in a compatible app and approve the rand quote. The merchant receives rand even if the balance you selected was Bitcoin or another supported asset.

VALR says VALR Pay works at all Pick n Pay stores, including Clothing and Liquor, and at thousands of participating merchants using local QR and online-payment networks. Support can vary by branch, so keep a normal payment method available.

2. Use a crypto card where it genuinely fits

A crypto card feels like a bank card, but it normally converts a stablecoin or other crypto asset before the merchant is settled. That can create a crypto conversion cost, foreign-exchange spread and a taxable disposal even when the swipe looks ordinary.

OKX is the clearest current card recommendation because its July 2026 Africa product page explicitly lists South Africa. Bybit Card is worth checking for existing Bybit users, but eligibility depends on the card programme presented to the verified account.

3. Cash out when direct payment is the wrong tool

Sometimes selling on VALR or Luno and withdrawing ZAR is cheaper and easier than forcing a crypto payment. It gives you a clear bank record and lets you compare the exact amount received.

P2P can also convert crypto into ZAR, but it is a trade with another person. Use escrow, verify the payer name, do not release crypto from an SMS or screenshot, and do not move the conversation to WhatsApp.

Spending crypto can still be a tax event

SARS treats goods or services exchanged for crypto as barter. In practice, paying with Bitcoin or converting USDT for a card purchase can dispose of the asset. Keep the timestamp, asset amount, ZAR value, fee and cost basis even for ordinary shopping.

Grey’s take: Crypto payments are convenient, but convenience does not erase spread, FX or tax. Compare the final rand cost to simply cashing out first.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay with Bitcoin at Pick n Pay?

Yes. VALR documents Bitcoin payments through VALR Pay at Pick n Pay stores across South Africa. Ask for QR payment at the till and confirm support at the branch.

What is the best crypto card in South Africa?

OKX is our first current choice because its official Africa card page explicitly includes South Africa. Bybit is the second card to check, but eligibility must be confirmed in-app.

Does a crypto card avoid tax?

No. Converting or spending crypto can be a disposal. Keep the ZAR value and cost-basis record for each transaction.
