A normal Luno rand withdrawal can take up to two business days after processing. An express withdrawal costs extra and depends on the bank, amount and processing window. Start by finding whether Luno has processed the instruction; the time you pressed Withdraw is not necessarily the start of bank clearing.
The official South African fee page lists normal withdrawal as free and express as R20 to RTC participant banks or R80 to other supported banks. The estimate for your bank and withdrawal amount matters more than a generic promise of instant payment.
Diagnose the stage before paying for speed
There are three useful timestamps: request submitted, provider processed, and bank credited. A transfer waiting for an exchange security check is at a different stage from a payment already sent to the bank.
Record the withdrawal reference and current status. Confirm the bank account selected, the amount and whether the service was normal or express. Avoid submitting a second withdrawal merely because the first has not appeared; that creates two instructions rather than accelerating the original one.
If your balance is still crypto, the cash-out journey also needs a sale into rand. The sale's fee and execution price are separate from the bank-withdrawal fee. The local cash-out guide covers that broader sequence.
Check the processing estimate for your withdrawal
Luno's timing guide distinguishes withdrawals by bank, amount and request time. It also warns that the receiving bank's internal processes can delay an express payment. Paying the express fee does not establish a guaranteed arrival time.
Before confirming, check whether express is offered for your selected bank, read the estimate and save the confirmation. Same-bank processing can differ from interbank processing. If express is absent, do not select a different bank merely to make the option appear.
For a weekend, public holiday or large withdrawal, ask support to confirm the applicable processing window if the app does not make it clear. The public help page contains conflicting weekend examples, so it is not a reliable basis for promising a specific weekend arrival. Keep enough rand in your bank for a payment that cannot wait.
Is the express fee proportionate?
The following worksheet compares the fee with the withdrawal amount. It measures the price of the service, not the value of your time.
| Amount | R20 as a percentage | R80 as a percentage |
|---|---|---|
| R500 | 4% | 16% |
| R2,000 | 1% | 4% |
| R10,000 | 0.2% | 0.8% |
Formula: fee ÷ amount × 100. If the fee is taken from the amount, a R500 withdrawal with a R20 charge leaves R480. If the account instead reserves the fee separately, the total debit is R520 for a R500 bank payment. Read the confirmation to see which amount is being quoted.
For non-urgent small withdrawals, normal processing avoids a charge that can consume a noticeable share of the balance. For a time-sensitive obligation, keep sufficient rand in your bank in advance; an exchange withdrawal should not be your only plan for a payment due today.
A support-ready delay record
Prepare a short chronology rather than sending repeated unexplained screenshots:
- Date and time submitted, with timezone.
- Normal or express service and amount.
- Provider status and withdrawal reference.
- Bank name and masked account identifier.
- Date/time of any processing notification.
- Whether the expected processing period has elapsed.
- Existing support-ticket number and any response.
Share private documents only through the official support process. Never provide a sign-in password or one-time authentication code. A bank statement excerpt can establish that a credit is missing, but redact unrelated transactions where the process permits it.
If Luno says the payment was sent, ask for the relevant bank-payment reference and give that to your bank. If Luno has not processed it, bank tracing is premature. If details are wrong, contact support promptly without assuming cancellation or recovery is possible.
Plan the next withdrawal
Save the actual timestamps after the credit arrives. They help you understand your previous transaction, but a single experience does not prove a future service-level guarantee. Recheck the fee and bank eligibility next time.
For choosing a purchase interface before a future sale, use the exchange hub. The immediate task here is narrower: identify the stage, check the relevant service window and escalate with a usable reference.
