Discovery Bank lets customers link a Luno account and manage supported crypto activity from the banking app. The integration can simplify moving money and viewing balances, but a crypto balance remains a different product from money held in a bank account.
Discovery's current product page documents linking, funding, buying and selling. Its May 2026 update also says customers can create a new Luno account directly in the app. Account acceptance, identity checks and the actual available options still need to be completed in the genuine app.
What is linked
Think of the connection as a way to access a Luno service through the Discovery interface. Before accepting, read which account is being connected, what permissions are requested and which provider supplies the crypto service. Do not infer that the bank guarantees a coin's value because the balance appears next to your banking products.
Discovery advertises no transfer fees for moving money to the linked wallet. That statement is about the transfer. It does not establish that buying or selling crypto is free, nor that a quoted exchange rate is the same as an order-book price.
Follow the documented path
The product page places linking under More, then Add Account, then Luno. Transfers start under Transact and Transfer, where you select the source Discovery account and the linked Luno account. Buying and selling begins from the linked account under Accounts and Crypto.
Treat these as current documented navigation, not a claim that we completed a transaction. App versions may differ. Stop if the account name or destination does not match your intention. A link in an unsolicited message is not a substitute for opening the installed app yourself.
Before the first transfer, record the opening bank and Luno rand balances. Make a manageable initial transfer and reconcile both sides. A linked display can be convenient, but the transaction record is what lets you investigate a mismatch.
Separate transfer cost from purchase cost
Use this original worksheet for any amount:
| Record | Example field |
|---|---|
| Bank debit | Rand leaving the selected account |
| Wallet credit | Rand available at Luno after the transfer |
| Purchase debit | Rand spent on the crypto order |
| Crypto receipt | Units credited after the purchase |
| Effective unit price | Purchase debit divided by crypto received |
Suppose a hypothetical R2,000 bank debit produces a R2,000 wallet credit. The transfer difference is zero. If the subsequent purchase spends R1,000 and credits 0.0005 BTC, the effective price is R2,000,000 per BTC. Those example quantities are not a market quote. The remaining R1,000 in the wallet is still rand, so do not count the entire transfer as crypto purchased.
Read the linked flow's final purchase or sale confirmation for its actual pricing. A tariff for a different Luno trading interface should not be substituted for that quote. Ask for clarification if a fee or spread is not understandable. A no-transfer-fee claim cannot resolve that separate question.
Where to investigate a problem
If the bank never debited the transfer, begin with the banking-side status. If the bank debited it but Luno has not credited it, preserve both references and use the official support path for the failed stage. If the crypto order executed at a different quantity than expected, inspect the order confirmation and fee rather than treating it as a bank-transfer issue.
For an access problem, distinguish an expired linking permission from an inaccessible Luno account. Repeatedly creating new accounts can complicate identity and record matching. Follow the provider's account-recovery instructions instead.
Keep records outside the dashboard
Save bank transfer records, crypto purchase confirmations and sale records in one dated folder. Record the asset quantity, rand debit or proceeds, fees and transaction IDs. A dashboard balance changes with market prices and cannot by itself reconstruct a transaction history.
Review the connection's permissions periodically and remove access you no longer need through the providers' settings. Removing a connection should not be assumed to sell crypto or close the underlying account; confirm the effect before proceeding.
The local buying guide explains the wider purchase sequence. The exchange hub helps compare alternatives. The integration's main benefit is a documented route within an existing banking app; its suitability still depends on the final price, custody arrangement and account terms.
