Buy a hardware wallet through the manufacturer's own store or a reseller currently listed by that manufacturer, then perform the model-specific authenticity and setup checks yourself. A sealed box, a familiar marketplace logo or a seller's “authorised” badge is not sufficient evidence.
For South African buyers, compare the full delivered cost and the seller's support process as well as the device. This guide does not certify a local reseller whose current listing has not been independently confirmed.
Verify the seller before paying
Open the manufacturer's official reseller directory and match the seller's exact name and domain. Similar spelling is not enough. Keep a dated copy of the listing with the order receipt and inspect which legal business will invoice and support you.
Trezor publishes a reseller directory and purchase guidance. Ledger likewise points buyers to its authorised channels and Genuine Check. These research links establish how to verify a seller; they are not invented affiliate offers or endorsements of an unverified South African shop.
Avoid a used or preconfigured device offered with an existing recovery phrase. A person who knows the backup may control the wallet even after the physical device changes hands. “Funds already loaded” is not a useful bonus for a wallet intended to secure your own assets.
Compare landed cost transparently
Use this hypothetical worksheet. The customs and tax line is an assumed quoted amount, not a calculation of South African import duty or VAT. Obtain the actual classification, charges and delivery terms from the seller or courier before buying.
| Cost item | Illustrative rand amount |
|---|---|
| Device converted at the assumed card rate | R2,400 |
| Shipping | R350 |
| Quoted import taxes/duties, assumption only | R450 |
| Courier clearance charge | R150 |
| Total delivered cost | R3,350 |
Compare that total with an equally specified local quote, including taxes, shipping, warranty and returns. A foreign price excluding import charges is not comparable with a delivered local price. Exchange-rate movement or the card provider's conversion fee can change the final debit.
The accompanying downloads/hardware-wallet-landed-cost.csv leaves the actual values blank. It includes a field for the source and date of each quote so you can update one input without pretending the old total is current.
Inspect the right things for the model
Check packaging against the manufacturer's model-specific guide, including expected seals and supplied items. Stop if anything suggests tampering or prior setup. Do not assume all generations use the same seal, backup length or accessories.
Trezor explains that the packaging number is not a device serial-number authenticity test. Use its authentication instructions for the exact model. Ledger says Genuine Check verifies its secure element but cannot establish the entire physical supply-chain history. These are useful checks with limits, not guarantees against every possible modification.
Download setup software through the manufacturer's official site. Avoid sponsored search lookalikes, unsolicited firmware tools or a QR insert directing you to an unfamiliar recovery website.
Generate and protect your own backup
For a new wallet, follow the manufacturer's process to generate a fresh backup yourself. Do not use words supplied by the seller. Record the backup privately using the recommended method and confirm it with the device's supported backup-check procedure.
Never photograph the phrase for a shop assistant, upload it to a web form or disclose it to support. Follow model-specific recovery instructions carefully; do not improvise by typing secrets into an arbitrary website or app. Keep the backup separate from the device and consider how you would recover after theft, fire or device failure.
Before moving a large balance, verify the receiving address on the hardware device and use a small meaningful test. Confirm that your chosen asset and network are supported. A genuine device cannot prevent you from approving an incorrect address or a malicious transaction you do not understand.
Plan returns before loading funds
Read who handles warranty and returns, what shipping is required and how a fault should be documented. Never include a recovery phrase with a returned device. If a wallet was used, follow the manufacturer's safe reset and recovery guidance, and assess whether any secrets may have been exposed before continuing to use that wallet.
The wallet hub, exchange hub and USDT guide cover adjacent setup and transfer questions. Obtain a current delivered quote and verify the actual seller before paying. The model above is not a local retailer recommendation, a shipping promise or a statement of South African import rates.
