For a crypto source-of-funds check, show where the specific money came from and how it reached the account under review. A current balance screenshot alone usually cannot explain that history. Build a short, traceable evidence chain instead of sending a disorganised archive.
Source of funds concerns the origin of the particular deposit or transaction. Source of wealth concerns how your wider financial position was accumulated. A provider may need both, but a long account history does not automatically answer a question about one recent payment.
Start with the request, not a generic checklist
Read which transaction, period and information the bank or exchange is asking about. Verify the request by opening its official app or website independently. Record the case number, deadline and secure upload route.
Luno's published guidance lists several types of supporting documents and requires them to establish the source and ownership of funds. It also sets format and recency conditions. Those are Luno's requirements, not a universal rule for every bank or exchange. Ask the requesting institution if an older transaction needs historical documents as well as current account evidence.
Match the pack to the source
| Scenario | Origin evidence | Movement evidence | Explanation to connect them |
|---|---|---|---|
| Salary savings | Payslips or employment records | Bank credits, accumulated balance and exchange deposit | Period saved and amount used |
| Investment proceeds | Original holding and sale confirmation | Broker payout, bank receipt and exchange funding | Which sale funded which deposit |
| Freelance income | Contract, invoice and work evidence | Client payment, wallet/exchange receipt and conversion | Service supplied and payer relationship |
| Existing crypto holding | Acquisition record and account ownership | Transfer IDs and exchange statements | Route from acquisition to current deposit |
A company account needs company evidence and relevant ownership/authority records. VALR's corporate onboarding guidance, for example, requests source-of-funds and business-purpose information alongside company documents. Do not substitute a director's personal payslip for unexplained company revenue.
Write a one-page transaction narrative
Use dates, amounts and references. A hypothetical narrative might say: “Salary was paid into my account monthly from April to June. R12,000 of those savings was transferred to my exchange account on 5 July. The attached statement pages identify those credits and the outgoing payment.”
Then number the supporting files so each sentence points to evidence. If only R8,000 of the deposit is explained by salary and R4,000 came from another source, identify the second source. Do not imply that the whole amount was salary-funded merely because a payslip exists.
For a crypto transfer, record the asset and network as well as the transaction identifier. Link the sending account to you where relevant. A public address can show a movement without proving ownership or the lawful economic source.
Keep the numbers reconcilable
Suppose an illustrative R10,000 exchange withdrawal produces a R9,980 bank credit after a R20 fee. Record gross proceeds R10,000, fee R20 and net bank receipt R9,980. If a statement shows R9,930 instead, the extra R50 remains unexplained until you obtain evidence.
Do not fill gaps with guessed fees, backdated invoices or edited screenshots. If a record is unavailable, say which record is missing, what you tried to obtain and what alternative evidence exists. An honest gap is more useful than a fabricated chain.
Submit privately and accurately
Keep original PDFs or exports. Luno's guidance says not to alter required documents and distinguishes bank documents from wallet evidence. If you are concerned about unrelated personal details, ask the institution what redaction is permitted before modifying the file. Retain an unaltered original securely.
A seed phrase, private key, password or one-time authentication code is not a source-of-funds document. Do not supply one to an alleged compliance officer. Avoid public file-sharing links containing identity and financial records.
If the review restricts your account
Ask which evidence is outstanding and how to escalate through the official support or complaints process. Keep a dated log of submissions and responses. Do not promise yourself a fixed release time from another user's experience, and do not open substitute accounts to bypass a restriction.
The cash-out hub, exchange hub and SARS guide cover related logistics and records. This article helps organise a truthful response; it does not guarantee acceptance or settle tax and compliance questions. Start with the institution’s actual request and explain any missing evidence rather than guessing what will satisfy it.
