A payment screenshot, SMS or buyer's “paid” status is not proof that you have received usable rands. In a crypto P2P sale, verify the payment independently through your bank and resolve any mismatch through the platform's dispute process before releasing crypto.
Escrow controls the crypto held inside an order. It does not make an external bank payment immune to fraud, investigation or a later dispute. Seeing a credit in your own banking app is a necessary check, not an absolute guarantee of legal finality.
Use a release checklist
Treat every row as a separate check. A reassuring completion rate or urgent message does not substitute for any of them.
| Check | What to inspect yourself | Stop condition |
|---|---|---|
| Order identity | Active order ID, asset, quantity and rand total | Counterparty asks to settle another order |
| Payment destination | Your registered account and authorised payment method | Request to use a different person's account |
| Receipt | Your bank's transaction record opened independently | Only a screenshot, SMS or pending claim exists |
| Payer | Name matches the platform's verified counterparty | Third party or unexplained mismatch |
| Amount | Exact amount associated with this order | Underpayment, split payment or overpayment |
| Instructions | Official order conversation and dispute controls | WhatsApp-only instructions or pressure to release |
Bybit's payment-method guidance requires accounts matching the verified name. Its current safety guidance warns against third-party accounts and suspicious payments. These controls reduce ambiguity; they do not establish that every ZAR offer is available or suitable for your account.
A realistic mismatch exercise
Consider an illustrative sale of 100 USDT for R1,800. The buyer uploads a document showing R1,800, but your own bank record shows no credit. The amount on the document does not change the missing receipt. Do not release to “activate” the payment.
Now suppose R1,800 appears, but the payer is a different person. Do not treat the correct amount as resolving the identity problem. Preserve the order and bank references, contact official platform support and ask your bank about the suspicious credit through a channel you independently opened.
If the buyer says they overpaid and asks for a refund to another account, do not make a new off-platform transfer on their instructions. That can create a second loss or send funds to a different party. Follow the documented dispute and bank process, with a record of the outcome.
If you have already paid as the buyer
Keep the order open where the platform's rules require it and use the dispute function promptly. Do not voluntarily mark a dispute resolved just because the seller promises to release later. Read the consequence of each button before tapping it.
Bybit distinguishes an order appeal from a report about a user's behaviour. A report alone does not start the payment dispute. Its help page directs users of older closed orders to a support webform when the in-order appeal window is unavailable. Check the current order status and official instructions instead of assuming a generic deadline applies to every case.
Mediation cannot guarantee recovery. A platform may need evidence from both sides, and a bank investigation follows its own process. Avoid repeated new payments while the original transaction remains unexplained.
Build the evidence pack
Keep the order ID, asset quantity, rand amount, full timestamps with time zone, bank transaction reference, counterparty's verified display details, order chat and support ticket numbers. Separate what you observed from what the other person claimed.
Submit documents only through an authenticated official channel. If a provider requests a recording, never expose a password, PIN, one-time code or recovery phrase. Check what information the provider requires and how it will be transmitted. Do not upload financial evidence to a publicly accessible link merely because a stranger asked.
For urgent suspected fraud, contact your bank's fraud function through its app or independently verified website. Keep a chronological log and follow its reporting instructions. The cash-out hub helps compare direct exchange withdrawal routes if P2P is unsuitable; the exchange hub provides account context. No affiliate offer should take priority over resolving a payment discrepancy.
