Buying a Ledger on Takealot is not automatically unsafe, but the platform name alone cannot establish that a particular device is trustworthy. Our recommendation is to buy directly from the manufacturer where possible, or use a currently authorised supplier whose identity and stock source you can verify. Check the device before putting crypto on it.
South Africans often look for hardware wallets on Takealot, Gumtree and other local sites because delivery is convenient and prices are quoted in rand. After the October 2026 Ledger supply-chain incident, the important question is who supplied the particular wallet and what happened to it before it reached you.
As of 14 October 2026, the official statements reviewed for this article do not establish a Takealot or Gumtree connection to that incident. This article is buying guidance, not an allegation that either platform is selling compromised wallets.
Check the seller, not just the Takealot name
Takealot’s help centre explains that products can be sold by sellers other than Takealot and that the product page indicates when this is the case. A familiar marketplace, fast delivery or good reviews should not substitute for checking the business fulfilling the offer. Takealot’s product and stock help.
Before ordering, record the exact seller name on the selected offer. Ask whether the wallet is new, who supplied it, and how suspected tampering is handled. Keep the listing, invoice and correspondence. If the seller cannot give you a clear answer about provenance, choose another purchasing route.
Ledger’s South African reseller directory listed Crypto Vault and Digiwallets when checked on 14 October 2026. Takealot was not named in that South Africa section. This does not determine the status of every independent seller using Takealot: match the seller to Ledger’s current directory and confirm the specific storefront with the manufacturer if needed. A merchant’s own “authorised” badge is not independent verification. Ledger’s reseller directory.
Why the recent Ledger breach matters
On 13 October, Ledger explained that an implant found in a CryptoBilis-supplied device captured recovery words from the screen during setup and transmitted them over LTE. The original Secure Element and operating system were not modified. Ledger said confirmed losses in the incident involved CryptoBilis devices and that it had not verified a drain linked to a device bought elsewhere. Ledger Donjon’s investigation update.
The story initially circulated with suspected losses of around $93 million. Bitquery’s investigation, checked for this article, estimates $102 million from 324 wallets across six chains. This is a third-party estimate; Ledger has not verified the total loss figure. Bitquery’s investigation.
Separately, Ledger confirmed that MediaMarktSaturn suspended sales following an implant report from a German customer. It said no losses were reported in that case. Trezor also tightened its reseller network, but said it had no evidence its devices were compromised. Ledger’s European statement, Trezor’s response.
The lesson for South African buyers is that even an authorised distribution channel needs scrutiny. An authorisation badge is useful information, not a guarantee against every supply-chain attack.
What to check when your Ledger arrives
Use several checks together:
- Inspect before connecting. Photograph the delivery packaging, box and device. Look for signs of opening, resealing, damage or unexplained changes. Compare your exact model with the manufacturer’s current guidance; packaging differs by model and production batch.
- Reject a preconfigured wallet. A supplied PIN or recovery phrase is a stop sign. You should choose your own PIN and generate a new wallet through the official setup process, privately. Never use words provided by a seller.
- Use official software. Obtain Ledger Wallet, formerly Ledger Live, through Ledger’s official download instructions and complete its Genuine Check. Do not install a seller-supplied app or follow an unexpected “security update” link.
- Understand the check’s limit. Ledger says Genuine Check verifies the Secure Element but cannot detect a separate spying implant when the original element remains intact. Passing it is important; it is not a complete physical inspection. Ledger’s buying and authenticity guidance.
Do not casually prise the device open. Ledger provides a model-specific hardware integrity guide, but warns that opening can damage the signer. If something worries you, pause setup and contact official support first. If funds were stolen, consult support and law enforcement before opening or sending away the device so evidence is preserved. Ledger’s incident guidance.
What if you already bought one on Takealot?
Do not assume your wallet is compromised merely because of where you bought it. Recheck the seller, retain your invoice, review setup history and inspect the exterior against official references. For an unused device with suspicious packaging or an uncertain source, pause before creating or restoring a wallet and ask Ledger Support for guidance.
If you have credible evidence that your recovery phrase was exposed, a replacement device using that same phrase will not solve the problem. The assets need to move to a fresh wallet generated on a trustworthy device. Do not type your phrase into a website, support chat or “verification” form. Ledger’s CryptoBilis-specific guidance should not be treated as a blanket instruction for every Takealot customer.
Prefer a clear purchasing chain
Our recommendation is to prioritise the manufacturer’s own store, then a currently authorised local supplier with a verifiable purchasing chain. Avoid second-hand or already configured wallets from anonymous classifieds sellers, including Gumtree listings. A seller claiming “sealed” does not establish what is inside the device.
If ordering internationally, compare the full landed price, shipping options and any applicable import charges at checkout. A lower advertised rand price is not a good trade-off for uncertainty about the device protecting your savings.
Buy Ledger through the manufacturer.
