Quick answer: VALR is our first choice for buying ether (ETH) with rands because it offers a simple purchase route and more price control through its trading interface. Luno is our second option for a more guided first purchase. Deposit by EFT, review the full quote and learn the network basics before withdrawing.

What is Ethereum?

Ethereum is a public blockchain designed to run smart contracts and applications. Ether (ETH) is its native asset. ETH is used to pay network transaction fees, interact with decentralised applications and help secure Ethereum through staking.

Buying ETH is not the same as buying shares in a company. There is no company promising profits, and demand for the network does not guarantee a higher ETH price. Ethereum can also be more complex than Bitcoin because users must consider smart-contract, wallet and network risks.

Both platforms support ZAR deposits by EFT. A normal EFT usually avoids the platform deposit charge attached to cards or some instant methods. Always compare the final amount of ETH you will receive.

How to buy ETH in five steps

  1. Register with VALR using invite code VAURZWMT, or use Luno as your second option, and complete identity verification.
  2. Add a unique password and two-factor authentication.
  3. Deposit rands into your ZAR wallet by EFT, using your unique reference.
  4. Choose ETH and decide between a simple quote or an exchange order.
  5. Review the rate, fee and final ETH amount before confirming.

VALR or Luno?

Choose VALR as the stronger all-round option when you want a simple first buy with room to place limit orders or trade more frequently. Choose Luno as the second option when your priority is a guided app and an uncomplicated purchase.

Both platforms also offer a wider range of crypto products and tokenised stock exposure for eligible South Africans. Keep those decisions separate: being able to buy many assets in one app does not make every asset suitable for you.

Should you stake your ETH?

Staking can earn variable rewards for helping secure Ethereum, but it is not a bank savings account. A platform may charge a share of rewards, withdrawals may not be instant and the rand value of ETH can fall by more than the rewards earned.

For a first purchase, it is reasonable to learn how ETH works before adding staking. Read the current platform terms and the displayed estimated return; do not rely on an old percentage quoted in an article.

Before you buy

  • Decide whether you want exposure to ETH or need it to use an Ethereum application.
  • Compare the total quote across platforms at the same time and rand amount.
  • Start small if you have never used a crypto exchange.
  • Do not send ETH to an address on a different network without confirming compatibility.
  • Treat unexpected tokens, support messages and “wallet verification” links as potential scams.
  • Never share a recovery phrase or private key.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ethereum the same as ETH?

Ethereum is the network; ether (ETH) is the asset used on it. People often use “Ethereum” when discussing the price of ETH.

Can I buy less than one ETH?

Yes. ETH is divisible, so you can buy a fraction. The minimum rand purchase depends on the platform and buying method.

Do I need a personal Ethereum wallet?

Not for your first exchange purchase. A personal wallet can give you direct control and access to on-chain applications, but it also makes you responsible for security, recovery and network fees.
