For a South African resident considering crypto futures, the first checks are the legal entity, the exact derivative product and permission to access it. A crypto-service licence, an accessible website or an account registration does not by itself establish authorisation for every leveraged product.
Futures create contractual exposure. They do not necessarily deliver coins you can withdraw. Leverage can make a small underlying price move large relative to the margin you supplied, and liquidation can occur before that margin is completely exhausted.
Know which contract you are examining
A dated futures contract has an expiry and settlement terms. A perpetual contract has no scheduled expiry and commonly uses periodic funding to help align its price with a reference market. Neither feature makes a contract suitable for indefinite holding without attention to costs and margin.
Read the contract's underlying asset, quotation currency, settlement currency and margin rules. A linear contract and an inverse contract can calculate profit and loss differently. Do not reuse a calculation merely because both contracts include “BTC” in their names.
The exchange hub provides provider context. If your intention is simply to own an asset without borrowing, compare a fully paid spot purchase separately.
Complete a product due-diligence file
| Question | Evidence required before deciding |
|---|---|
| Who is the counterparty or intermediary? | Current account and product terms naming the entity |
| What authorisation covers this activity? | Official register and scope matched to entity and product |
| Is a South African resident eligible? | Current residence restrictions and account confirmation |
| Where is the position executed? | Venue or third-party execution disclosure |
| What collateral is at risk? | Margin mode, collateral weights and automatic top-up settings |
| What closes the position? | Mark price, maintenance margin, liquidation and settlement rules |
| What can it cost to hold? | Entry/exit charges, funding and other applicable fees |
VALR's documentation distinguishes its futures provisions from a Perps product routed through third-party infrastructure. Its terms say the relevant execution infrastructure can determine margin, funding and liquidation rules. Read the product-specific documents rather than assuming one set of brand-wide mechanics.
The documents explain mechanics; they do not establish that a particular South African account is eligible for every contract. Before funding, match the entity and product disclosure to the service actually offered.
Work through margin without inventing a liquidation price
Assume a hypothetical linear long position with R20,000 notional exposure and R2,000 initial margin, equivalent to ten times exposure before costs. Assume price changes translate proportionately into notional profit or loss and ignore financing, fees and currency changes for this first calculation.
| Underlying move | Modelled position result | Share of initial R2,000 margin |
|---|---|---|
| +2% | +R400 | +20% |
| -2% | -R400 | -20% |
| -5% | -R1,000 | -50% |
This table does not mean the position survives every move shown. Maintenance margin, mark pricing, fees and other balances determine when liquidation is triggered. A simplistic “ten times leverage means liquidation exactly 10% away” rule is unreliable.
Bybit's margin documentation distinguishes initial margin from the maintenance amount needed to keep a position open. Cross-margin arrangements can expose shared eligible collateral. Isolated margin changes how collateral is allocated, but you must inspect automatic additions and contractual loss provisions before asserting a maximum loss.
Add the risks outside the price chart
You may face a custody failure, outage, rejected order, delayed close, collateral conversion or a funding charge. A stop order does not guarantee an execution price during a gap or thin market. An insurance fund is not personal deposit insurance.
Record the worst-case treatment in the actual terms, including any deficit liability, automatic deleveraging or loss-allocation mechanism. Do not treat the example's initial R2,000 as a contractual maximum loss or assume negative-balance protection.
Decide whether the product answers your task
If you cannot explain what you own, how the position is margined and how it can be closed, pause before funding it. A demo can help with interface familiarity but does not prove live execution quality or legal eligibility.
Keep the contract specification, fee schedule and account eligibility evidence dated. Use the wallet hub for spot custody questions and the cash-out hub for rand withdrawal context. Neither a high leverage limit nor a promotional credit is a reason to skip product review.
