SARS Crypto Tax Guide

SARS treats crypto assets as financial assets for tax purposes rather than currency. Its public guidance says ordinary income-tax rules apply and that taxpayers must declare taxable crypto income. This guide turns that principle into a practical preparation checklist; it does not determine your personal assessment.

Build a complete transaction ledger

Combine every exchange, wallet and bank account into one chronological record. Include:

  • purchases and sales for ZAR or another fiat currency;
  • crypto-to-crypto swaps;
  • goods or services bought with crypto;
  • staking, mining, rewards, airdrops and other receipts;
  • transfers between your own wallets; and
  • fees, lost access, disposals and business transactions where applicable.

For each event, keep the timestamp, asset, quantity, ZAR value, transaction type, platform or wallet, fee and supporting reference. A bank withdrawal alone does not show when a taxable event occurred.

Separate transfers from disposals

A transfer between wallets you own should reconcile: the asset leaves one address and arrives at another, less any network fee. A sale, swap or spend can have a different tax consequence. Document ownership of both wallets so the distinction can be supported later.

Determine character with evidence

Whether an amount is income or capital depends on the facts and normal tax principles. Preserve evidence of intention and conduct: why you acquired the asset, how frequently you traded, how the activity was organised, and what led to disposal. Do not assume every crypto gain uses capital-gains treatment.

Reconcile before filing

ReconciliationWhat should agree
ExchangeOpening assets + acquisitions + receipts − disposals − transfers − fees = closing assets
WalletOn-chain inflows and outflows match the ledger and ownership records
BankZAR deposits and withdrawals map to platform records without being treated as the only tax events
ValuationOne documented, reasonable ZAR method is applied consistently

Investigate missing rows, duplicate imports and unexplained balances before calculating totals. Keep original CSVs, statements and transaction hashes.

CARF and information reporting

South Africa's Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework (CARF) took effect on 1 March 2026. SARS says reporting crypto-asset service providers must collect and report specified transaction information, while individuals must still declare taxable crypto activity through the normal tax-return process. CARF does not replace the ordinary income-tax rules or decide whether a receipt or gain is revenue or capital.

Check SARS's current publications at filing time because reporting details and filing requirements can change. A draft SARS guide published for comment on 31 August 2026 is a draft, not final law or final guidance.

Start with SARS Crypto Assets & Tax and use a registered tax practitioner for uncertain classification, cross-border activity, business income, prior-year corrections or material amounts. The Crypto University tax hub keeps the ZA journey separate from global crypto concepts.
